What is a prostate MRI?

A prostate MRI (often called a multiparametric MRI) takes detailed pictures of the prostate gland. It helps your doctor decide whether a biopsy is needed and, if so, which area to target. The radiologist usually scores any areas of interest using a standard system called PI-RADS.

You lie on your back while the scan is done with a coil over your pelvis. Gadolinium contrast is often injected into a vein, and you may be given an injection to reduce bowel movement. A raised PSA has many causes, and most findings are not serious — your doctor will explain the result with you.

Why your doctor might request a prostate MRI

  • A raised or rising PSA blood test
  • An abnormal prostate examination
  • Deciding whether a biopsy is needed and guiding where to sample
  • Active surveillance of a known low-risk prostate condition

Prostate MRI: preparation, referral & Medicare

Preparing for your prostate MRI

  • You may be asked to avoid ejaculation for a few days and to have an empty rectum — follow the clinic's instructions
  • Some clinics ask you to fast for a few hours
  • Complete the metal safety questionnaire, including hip replacements or implants
  • Tell the clinic about kidney problems, glaucoma or previous contrast reactions

How long it takes: About 30–45 minutes

Referral, Medicare & bulk billing

Prostate MRI attracts a Medicare rebate for specific clinical criteria, generally on a specialist referral (for example from a urologist or radiation oncologist), and on a Medicare-eligible machine. GP-referred prostate MRI is usually private. The clinic will confirm whether your referral is Medicare-eligible. Booking through Radly sends a request, and the clinic confirms the time with you.

How it works

Prostate MRI FAQs

Can my GP refer me for a prostate MRI?

Yes, but GP-referred prostate MRI is usually private. A urologist's referral may attract a Medicare rebate if specific criteria are met. The clinic will confirm.

Does a prostate MRI replace a biopsy?

Not entirely. It helps decide whether a biopsy is needed and where to take it. Your urologist will discuss the next steps with you.

What does a PI-RADS score mean?

It's a 1–5 scale describing how likely an area is to be significant. Your doctor will explain what your score means for you.

How do I book a prostate MRI online?

Choose a clinic on Radly, select MRI as your scan, add your preferred timing and attach your referral, then send your booking request. The clinic contacts you to confirm the appointment and any preparation.

How soon can I get a prostate MRI?

Appointments for MRI are usually 3 days to 2 weeks, depending on the clinic and the exam. You can send a request on Radly at any time, and the clinic replies with its next available time.
