An abdominal MRI takes detailed pictures of the organs in the upper abdomen, such as the liver, gallbladder, bile ducts, pancreas, spleen, kidneys and adrenal glands. A special type called MRCP looks specifically at the bile and pancreatic ducts without any injection.
You'll lie on your back with a coil over your abdomen and will be asked to hold your breath several times. Gadolinium contrast is often injected to help characterise findings, such as a spot on the liver seen on ultrasound or CT.
Why your doctor might request an abdominal MRI
- Further assessment of a liver or kidney finding seen on another scan
- Suspected gallstones in the bile ducts (MRCP)
- Assessing the pancreas or pancreatic cysts
- Monitoring known liver conditions
- Adrenal gland findings

Referral, Medicare & bulk billing
Abdominal MRI attracts a Medicare rebate only for specific indications, generally on a specialist referral, and on a Medicare-eligible machine. GP-referred abdominal MRI is often private for adults. The clinic will confirm whether your referral is Medicare-eligible. Booking through Radly sends a request, and the clinic confirms the time with you.
