A brain MRI produces highly detailed images of the brain, the nerves leading from it and the surrounding structures. It is better than CT at showing soft tissue, so it is often used when your doctor needs a closer look at the brain itself rather than the skull.
You lie on your back with your head in a padded coil while the scanner takes a series of pictures. The machine is loud, so you'll be given earplugs or headphones. Some brain MRIs include an injection of gadolinium contrast through a small cannula in your arm to make certain areas stand out.
Why your doctor might request a brain MRI
- Unexplained seizures
- Persistent or unusual headaches where your doctor suspects an underlying cause
- Dizziness, vertigo or hearing loss on one side
- Suspected multiple sclerosis or other nerve conditions
- Follow-up of a known finding, such as a pituitary lesion
- Changes in memory, vision or coordination
Brain MRI: preparation, referral & Medicare
Preparing for your brain MRI
- You'll complete a metal safety questionnaire — tell the clinic about pacemakers, implants, aneurysm clips, cochlear implants or any metal fragments in your eyes
- Remove jewellery, hairclips, hearing aids and anything metallic before the scan
- Avoid wearing makeup with metallic particles; you may be asked to change into a gown
- Let the clinic know if you are claustrophobic — they can talk you through options
- If contrast is planned, mention kidney problems or previous contrast reactions
How long it takes: About 30–45 minutes, a little longer if contrast is used
Referral, Medicare & bulk billing
MRI attracts a Medicare rebate only for specific clinical indications, and only when the scan is done on a Medicare-eligible (licensed) MRI machine. GPs can request Medicare-eligible MRI for certain indications in adults, and for a wider range of indications in children under 16. Specialists can request MRI for more conditions. If your referral or the machine doesn't qualify, the scan is private and you pay the full fee. The clinic will confirm whether your referral is Medicare-eligible before your appointment. Booking through Radly sends a request, and the clinic confirms the time with you.

Brain MRI FAQs
Can a GP refer me for a brain MRI under Medicare?
In some cases. GPs can request a Medicare-eligible brain MRI for certain indications, such as unexplained seizures or headache where a specific cause is suspected. Other reasons may need a specialist referral or be private. The clinic will confirm.
Is a brain MRI better than a CT head scan?
They answer different questions. MRI shows brain tissue in more detail and has no radiation, while CT is faster and better for emergencies such as suspected bleeding or a recent head injury.
Will I need contrast for a brain MRI?
Not always. The radiologist decides based on the reason for the scan. If contrast is needed, it is injected into a vein partway through the scan.
What if I feel claustrophobic?
Tell the clinic when you book. Staff can explain the process, let you hear the noises first and stay in contact with you. Some people talk to their GP about a mild sedative beforehand.
How do I book a brain MRI online?
Choose a clinic on Radly, select MRI as your scan, add your preferred timing and attach your referral, then send your booking request. The clinic contacts you to confirm the appointment and any preparation.
How soon can I get a brain MRI?
Appointments for MRI are usually 3 days to 2 weeks, depending on the clinic and the exam. You can send a request on Radly at any time, and the clinic replies with its next available time.
