What is a pelvic MRI?

A pelvic MRI takes detailed pictures of the organs and tissues in the lower abdomen, including the bladder, rectum, uterus and ovaries or the prostate, as well as the pelvic bones and muscles. It is often used after an ultrasound when more detail is needed.

Some pelvic MRIs use specific protocols — for example to look for deep endometriosis or to assess fistulas. You may be given an injection to reduce bowel movement, and sometimes gadolinium contrast into a vein.

Why your doctor might request a pelvic MRI

  • Suspected endometriosis or adenomyosis
  • Assessing fibroids or ovarian findings seen on ultrasound
  • Perianal fistula or other bowel conditions
  • Pelvic pain not explained by other tests
  • Staging or follow-up of a known condition, as directed by your specialist

Pelvic MRI: preparation, referral & Medicare

Preparing for your pelvic MRI

  • You may be asked to fast for a few hours and to arrive with a partly full or empty bladder — follow the clinic's instructions
  • Complete the metal safety questionnaire, including any IUD or implants
  • Some protocols use a bowel-relaxing injection; tell the clinic about glaucoma or heart conditions
  • Mention kidney problems or previous contrast reactions if contrast may be used

How long it takes: About 30–60 minutes

Referral, Medicare & bulk billing

Pelvic MRI attracts a Medicare rebate only for specific indications, generally on a specialist referral, and on a Medicare-eligible machine. Some pelvic MRI requested by a GP (for example certain endometriosis assessments) may be eligible under specific criteria, but many requests are private. The clinic will confirm whether your referral is Medicare-eligible. Booking through Radly sends a request, and the clinic confirms the time with you.

Pelvic MRI FAQs

Can a pelvic MRI show endometriosis?

MRI with a dedicated protocol can show deep endometriosis and adenomyosis. It can't rule out all endometriosis, so your gynaecologist will interpret it alongside your symptoms.

Do I need to fast for a pelvic MRI?

Often you'll be asked not to eat for a few hours beforehand to reduce bowel movement. The clinic will give you specific instructions.

Is a pelvic MRI covered by Medicare?

It depends on the reason and who refers you. Many indications need a specialist referral. The clinic will confirm.

How do I book a pelvic MRI online?

Choose a clinic on Radly, select MRI as your scan, add your preferred timing and attach your referral, then send your booking request. The clinic contacts you to confirm the appointment and any preparation.

How soon can I get a pelvic MRI?

Appointments for MRI are usually 3 days to 2 weeks, depending on the clinic and the exam. You can send a request on Radly at any time, and the clinic replies with its next available time.
