What is a CT head?

A CT head scan uses X-rays and a computer to create cross-sectional pictures of the brain, skull and sinuses. It is quick — the scan itself takes seconds — which makes it the first test for many urgent questions, such as bleeding after a head injury.

You lie on your back with your head in a cradle while the table moves through a ring-shaped scanner. The machine is open, so claustrophobia is rarely an issue. Contrast is sometimes injected into a vein, depending on the question your doctor is asking.

Why your doctor might request a CT head

  • Head injury, particularly with symptoms such as vomiting or confusion
  • Sudden severe headache
  • Suspected stroke (usually in a hospital emergency department)
  • New neurological symptoms such as weakness or confusion
  • When MRI isn't suitable or available

CT head: preparation, referral & Medicare

Preparing for your CT head

  • No special preparation is usually needed for a non-contrast scan
  • If contrast is planned, you may be asked to fast briefly; mention kidney problems, diabetes medication or contrast allergies
  • Remove earrings, hairclips, glasses and hearing aids
  • Tell staff if you are, or might be, pregnant

How long it takes: About 10–15 minutes at the clinic; the scan itself takes seconds

Referral, Medicare & bulk billing

A CT head scan needs a referral from a doctor. With a valid referral, CT attracts a Medicare rebate, and many clinics bulk bill some CT scans — bulk billing varies by clinic. CT uses a modest radiation dose, so it's only done when the benefit outweighs the risk. For sudden or severe symptoms, go to an emergency department rather than booking. The clinic will confirm billing for your referral. Booking through Radly sends a request, and the clinic confirms the time with you.

CT head FAQs

Is a CT head scan bulk billed?

Many clinics bulk bill CT with a valid referral, but it varies. The clinic will confirm whether there is a gap for your scan.

How much radiation is in a CT head scan?

A CT head scan uses a relatively low dose compared with other CT scans. Your doctor and radiologist only request it when the benefit outweighs the small risk.

Should I have a CT or MRI of my brain?

CT is fast and best for bleeding and fractures. MRI shows brain tissue in more detail. Your doctor will choose based on your symptoms.

How do I book a CT head online?

Choose a clinic on Radly, select CT Scan as your scan, add your preferred timing and attach your referral, then send your booking request. The clinic contacts you to confirm the appointment and any preparation.

How soon can I get a CT head?

Appointments for CT scan are usually 1–4 days, depending on the clinic and the exam. You can send a request on Radly at any time, and the clinic replies with its next available time.
