What is a CT KUB?

CT KUB stands for kidneys, ureters and bladder. It's a non-contrast CT designed to find kidney stones, show their size and position, and check whether a stone is blocking the flow of urine.

It's quick and usually uses a lower radiation dose than a standard abdominal CT. No injection or drink is needed — stones show up well on their own. You lie on your back and hold your breath for a few seconds.

Why your doctor might request a CT KUB

  • Sudden severe flank or loin pain (renal colic)
  • Blood in the urine with suspected stones
  • Follow-up of known kidney stones
  • Planning stone treatment

CT KUB: preparation, referral & Medicare

Preparing for your CT KUB

  • No fasting or contrast is usually needed
  • Some clinics ask you to have a comfortably full bladder
  • Remove belts and clothing with metal
  • Tell staff if you are, or might be, pregnant — ultrasound may be preferred

How long it takes: About 10–15 minutes

Referral, Medicare & bulk billing

A CT KUB needs a referral, which a GP can provide. With a valid referral it attracts a Medicare rebate, and many clinics bulk bill some CT — it varies by clinic. If you have severe pain with fever, vomiting or you can't pass urine, go to an emergency department. The clinic will confirm billing for your referral. Booking through Radly sends a request, and the clinic confirms the time with you.
