What is a CT abdomen and pelvis?

A CT abdomen and pelvis scan creates detailed pictures of the liver, gallbladder, pancreas, spleen, kidneys, bowel, bladder and the blood vessels and lymph nodes of the abdomen and pelvis. It is one of the most common CT scans.

Most scans use contrast injected into a vein, and some also ask you to drink a contrast liquid beforehand to outline the bowel. You lie on your back with your arms above your head and hold your breath briefly while the scanner takes the pictures.

Why your doctor might request a CT abdomen and pelvis

  • Ongoing or unexplained abdominal pain
  • Suspected diverticulitis or appendicitis
  • Following up findings from ultrasound or blood tests
  • Unexplained weight loss
  • Monitoring a known condition

CT abdomen and pelvis: preparation, referral & Medicare

Preparing for your CT abdomen and pelvis

  • You'll usually be asked to fast for a few hours before the scan
  • You may need to drink oral contrast over 30–60 minutes before the scan
  • Mention kidney problems, diabetes medication (such as metformin) and contrast allergies
  • A recent kidney function blood test may be requested
  • Tell staff if you are, or might be, pregnant

How long it takes: About 15–30 minutes, or up to 90 minutes if you need to drink oral contrast

Referral, Medicare & bulk billing

A CT abdomen and pelvis needs a referral. With a valid referral, CT attracts a Medicare rebate, and many clinics bulk bill some CT — it varies by clinic. CT uses radiation, and the dose for this scan is higher than for a head or sinus CT, so it's requested when the benefit is clear. The clinic will confirm billing for your referral. Booking through Radly sends a request, and the clinic confirms the time with you.

CT abdomen and pelvis FAQs

Do I need to fast for a CT abdomen?

Usually yes — often for a few hours beforehand. The clinic will give you exact instructions, including whether you'll drink oral contrast.

Why do I have to drink something before the scan?

Oral contrast outlines the bowel so the radiologist can tell it apart from other structures. Not every scan needs it.

Is a CT abdomen bulk billed?

Many clinics bulk bill with a valid referral, but it varies. The clinic will confirm any gap before your scan.

How do I book a CT abdomen and pelvis online?

Choose a clinic on Radly, select CT Scan as your scan, add your preferred timing and attach your referral, then send your booking request. The clinic contacts you to confirm the appointment and any preparation.

How soon can I get a CT abdomen and pelvis?

Appointments for CT scan are usually 1–4 days, depending on the clinic and the exam. You can send a request on Radly at any time, and the clinic replies with its next available time.
