What is a CT coronary angiogram?

A CT coronary angiogram, or CTCA, uses a fast CT scanner and contrast to show the coronary arteries — the blood vessels that supply the heart muscle. It can show narrowing or plaque without the need for a catheter.

Clear pictures need a slow, steady heart rate, so you may be given medication by mouth or through a cannula to slow your heart, and a spray under the tongue to widen the arteries. ECG pads are placed on your chest and you'll hold your breath for a few seconds while contrast is injected.

Why your doctor might request a CT coronary angiogram

  • Chest pain where your doctor wants to check the coronary arteries
  • An unclear or borderline stress test result
  • Assessing coronary artery bypass grafts
  • Unusual coronary artery anatomy

CT coronary angiogram: preparation, referral & Medicare

Preparing for your CT coronary angiogram

  • Avoid caffeine (coffee, tea, energy drinks, cola, chocolate) for at least 12–24 hours — follow the clinic's instructions
  • You may be asked to fast for a couple of hours
  • Tell the clinic about asthma, heart medications, erectile dysfunction medication, kidney problems and contrast allergies
  • Arrange for someone to take you home if you're given medication that may make you light-headed
  • Bring your medication list

How long it takes: About 1–2 hours at the clinic, including preparation; the scan itself is quick

Referral, Medicare & bulk billing

Medicare criteria for CT coronary angiograms are strict. A rebate generally applies only when specific clinical criteria are met, and some indications require a specialist (cardiologist) referral. Scans outside the criteria are private. The clinic will confirm whether your referral is Medicare-eligible. Booking through Radly sends a request, and the clinic confirms the time with you.

CT coronary angiogram FAQs

Can I drink coffee before a CTCA?

No. Caffeine raises your heart rate and can blur the images. Avoid it for 12–24 hours beforehand, as instructed by the clinic.

Is a CTCA covered by Medicare?

Only when strict clinical criteria are met, and sometimes only with a cardiologist's referral. The clinic will confirm.

What's the difference between a CTCA and a calcium score?

A calcium score is a short, non-contrast scan that measures calcium in the arteries. A CTCA uses contrast to show the arteries themselves and any narrowing.

How do I book a CT coronary angiogram online?

Choose a clinic on Radly, select CT Scan as your scan, add your preferred timing and attach your referral, then send your booking request. The clinic contacts you to confirm the appointment and any preparation.

How soon can I get a CT coronary angiogram?

Appointments for CT scan are usually 1–4 days, depending on the clinic and the exam. You can send a request on Radly at any time, and the clinic replies with its next available time.
