What is an image-guided biopsy?

An image-guided biopsy is a minimally invasive way to take a small sample of tissue for testing. A radiologist uses ultrasound, CT or another imaging method to guide a fine needle precisely to the area, for example in the thyroid, breast, a lymph node, liver or soft tissue lump.

It is done under local anaesthetic. A fine needle aspiration (FNA) collects cells, while a core biopsy takes a slightly larger tissue sample. Many biopsied areas are benign, and your doctor will talk you through the results and any next steps.

Why your doctor might request an image-guided biopsy

  • Sampling a thyroid nodule
  • Sampling a breast lump or finding on a mammogram or ultrasound
  • Sampling an enlarged lymph node
  • Sampling a liver, kidney or soft tissue finding

Image-guided biopsy: preparation, referral & Medicare

Preparing for your image-guided biopsy

  • Tell the clinic about blood thinners, antiplatelet medication and diabetes medication — some may need to be paused on your doctor's advice
  • A recent blood test may be needed for some biopsies
  • Fasting is needed for some deeper biopsies; the clinic will confirm
  • Arrange a driver for deeper biopsies or if sedation is used
  • Bring previous imaging related to the area

How long it takes: About 30–60 minutes for superficial biopsies; 2–4 hours for deeper biopsies with observation

Referral, Medicare & bulk billing

An image-guided biopsy needs a referral from a GP or specialist. With a valid referral it attracts a Medicare rebate; some clinics bulk bill and others charge a gap — it varies. The clinic may review your imaging first to plan the procedure. The clinic will confirm billing and any preparation. Booking through Radly sends a request, and the clinic confirms the time with you.

Image-guided biopsy FAQs

Does a biopsy hurt?

Local anaesthetic numbs the area. You'll usually feel pressure and perhaps mild soreness afterwards.

How long do biopsy results take?

Usually several days, as the sample is examined in a laboratory. Results go to your referring doctor.

What's the difference between an FNA and a core biopsy?

An FNA uses a very fine needle to collect cells. A core biopsy uses a slightly larger needle to take a small strip of tissue.

How do I book an image-guided biopsy online?
