What is a PSMA PET scan?

A PSMA PET scan uses a tracer that attaches to PSMA (prostate-specific membrane antigen), a protein found on most prostate cancer cells. Combined with CT, it shows where prostate cancer cells may be in the body, often more clearly than older imaging.

It's used by urologists and oncologists to help plan treatment — for example, before surgery or radiotherapy, or if PSA rises after treatment. The tracer is injected and you rest for about an hour before the scan. Your specialist will explain how the results guide your care.

Why your doctor might request a PSMA PET scan

  • Staging newly diagnosed prostate cancer in certain risk groups
  • A rising PSA after surgery or radiotherapy
  • Planning targeted treatments

Referral, Medicare & bulk billing

Medicare rebates PSMA PET for specific prostate cancer indications, generally on a specialist referral (for example from a urologist or oncologist). Other requests are private. The clinic will confirm whether your referral is Medicare-eligible. Booking through Radly sends a request, and the clinic confirms the time with you.
