A PET-CT scan combines two tests in one. A small amount of tracer — most commonly FDG, a form of glucose — is injected and is taken up by active cells. The PET camera shows where the tracer collects, and the CT shows the anatomy, so the two together pinpoint areas of activity.
PET-CT is most often used to stage and monitor cancer, and also for some heart, brain and infection questions. After the injection you rest quietly for about an hour while the tracer distributes, then lie on the scanner for the pictures. If you're having a PET scan for a cancer question, your specialist will talk you through what the results mean.
Why your doctor might request a PET-CT scan
- Staging some cancers and checking response to treatment
- Looking for the source of an unexplained finding, as directed by a specialist
- Assessing some types of lymphoma
- Some heart, brain or infection assessments
PET-CT scan: preparation, referral & Medicare
Preparing for your PET-CT scan
- Fast for about 6 hours (water is usually fine) — the clinic will give exact instructions
- If you have diabetes, tell the clinic early; you'll get specific instructions about food and medication
- Avoid strenuous exercise for 24 hours beforehand
- Wear warm, comfortable clothing without metal
- Tell staff if you are pregnant or breastfeeding
How long it takes: About 2–3 hours in total, including the rest period after the injection
Referral, Medicare & bulk billing
Medicare covers PET-CT for specific cancer and clinical indications, generally on a specialist referral. Scans outside those indications are private. The clinic will confirm whether your referral is Medicare-eligible. Booking through Radly sends a request, and the clinic confirms the time with you.

PET-CT scan FAQs
How long does a PET scan take?
Allow 2–3 hours. Most of that is resting after the injection; the scan itself takes about 20–40 minutes.
Can a GP refer me for a PET scan?
Medicare-rebated PET scans generally need a specialist referral for specific indications. The clinic will confirm.
Do I need to fast before a PET scan?
Yes, usually for about 6 hours, as food affects how the tracer is taken up. Water is usually allowed.
Will I be radioactive afterwards?
Only for a short time. The clinic may suggest avoiding close contact with babies and pregnant people for a few hours.
