Find a clinic for your MRI scan

Booking through
Radly is simple.

If the clinic hasn’t acknowledged your request after 24 hours, Radly will follow up. We check in by SMS during daytime hours where SMS is available and you haven’t opted out. Reply N if you haven’t been contacted and our team will follow up. Acknowledgment does not mean an appointment is booked.

What MRI scan is used for

Common reasons your doctor may recommend MRI scan.

Brain and spine

The most detailed scan for headaches needing investigation, nerve compression, disc problems, and neurological conditions.

Joints and sports injuries

Shows ligaments, cartilage, and menisci in detail — the go-to scan for knee, shoulder, and ankle injuries that X-ray can't see.

Soft tissue and organs

Detailed imaging of the liver, prostate, pelvis, and other organs without any radiation.

Ongoing condition monitoring

Used to track conditions such as multiple sclerosis and to follow up previous findings over time.

MRI Scan: cost, referral & preparation

Cost & bulk billing

MRI costs vary more than any other scan because not all MRI machines are Medicare-licensed. Medicare-eligible scans at licensed clinics typically cost $0–$250 out of pocket, while non-eligible scans can cost $300–$800 or more. Some clinics bulk bill eligible MRI referrals. Comparing clinics before you book can save you hundreds of dollars.

Referral & Medicare

A referral from a GP or specialist is required. Medicare rebates only apply to specific MRI items at clinics holding a Medicare licence for that scanner. Your referring doctor can advise whether your scan is likely to attract a rebate, and the clinic will confirm when you book.

Preparing for your MRI scan

  • Remove all metal: jewellery, watches, hair clips, piercings, hearing aids.
  • Tell the clinic in advance about any implants, pacemakers, cochlear implants, or metal fragments in your body.
  • You may need to fast for 4–6 hours if contrast dye is planned or you are having an abdominal MRI.
  • If you experience claustrophobia, let the clinic know. They can talk you through options.

MRI Scan FAQs

How do I find MRI clinics near me?

Search MRI clinics on Radly by suburb or postcode, compare bulk billing and reviews, and request your booking online with your referral. No phone calls needed. The clinic confirms your appointment directly.

Can I request MRI scan online?

Yes. Pick a clinic on Radly, select your scan and preferred time, attach your referral, and send your booking request in about 30 seconds. The clinic contacts you to confirm. Appointments for MRI are usually 3 days to 2 weeks.

How long does an MRI take?

Typically 20–60 minutes depending on the body part being scanned. You will need to stay still during the scan, and the clinic will give you earplugs or headphones for the noise.

Is an MRI covered by Medicare?

Only some MRI scans attract a Medicare rebate, and only at clinics with a Medicare-licensed MRI machine. Ask your referring doctor, and confirm the expected cost with the clinic when booking.

Can I have an MRI if I have a metal implant?

Many modern implants are MRI-safe, but the clinic must check the exact implant before your scan. Always disclose any implants, pacemakers, or metal fragments when you book.
