What is a lump and bump ultrasound?

Lumps under the skin are very common. Most are harmless, such as fatty lipomas, cysts, swollen lymph nodes or ganglions near joints. Ultrasound shows whether a lump is solid or fluid-filled, its size, its depth and its blood supply.

The sonographer places the probe directly over the lump and may compare it with the other side of the body. The scan is quick and painless.

If the result is unclear, the radiologist may suggest MRI or a biopsy. Your doctor will talk through the report and any next steps with you.

Why your doctor might request a lump and bump ultrasound

  • A new lump under the skin
  • A lump that is growing or changing
  • Suspected cyst, lipoma or ganglion
  • Swollen lymph nodes in the neck, armpit or groin
  • A lump near a joint or tendon

Lump and bump ultrasound FAQs

Can an ultrasound tell if a lump is cancer?

Ultrasound shows features that help the radiologist judge whether a lump looks benign. If there is any doubt, a biopsy gives a definite answer. Your doctor will explain the result.

Is ultrasound the right test for a lump?

For most lumps under the skin, yes. It is usually the first test, with MRI used if more detail is needed.

Do I need a referral for a lump ultrasound?

Yes. A referral from your GP or specialist is needed for a Medicare rebate.

How do I book a lump and bump ultrasound online?

How soon can I get a lump and bump ultrasound?

Appointments for ultrasound are usually 1–3 days, depending on the clinic and the exam. You can send a request on Radly at any time, and the clinic replies with its next available time.
