What is a scrotal ultrasound?

You lie on your back and a towel is used for privacy and support. The sonographer applies warm gel and gently scans each testis, the epididymis and nearby veins, often using Doppler to check blood flow.

Ultrasound is very good at telling whether a lump is inside or outside the testis. Many scrotal lumps are benign, such as cysts, fluid collections (hydroceles) or enlarged veins (varicoceles).

A sudden, severe pain in the testicle can be an emergency (testicular torsion). In that case go straight to an emergency department rather than booking a scan.

Why your doctor might request a scrotal ultrasound

  • A lump or swelling in the scrotum
  • Ongoing testicular ache or discomfort
  • Suspected varicocele or hydrocele
  • Investigating fertility concerns
  • Follow-up of infection or injury

Scrotal ultrasound: preparation, referral & Medicare

Preparing for your scrotal ultrasound

  • No fasting or bladder preparation is needed.
  • Wear comfortable clothing that is easy to remove.
  • You can ask for a male sonographer or a chaperone if it is available.

How long it takes: About 15–30 minutes

Referral, Medicare & bulk billing

A referral from your GP or specialist is needed for a Medicare rebate. Many clinics bulk bill scrotal ultrasound for eligible patients and some charge a gap. The clinic confirms billing when it accepts your booking request.

Scrotal ultrasound FAQs

Is a testicular lump always serious?

No. Many lumps are benign, but every new lump should be checked by your doctor. The ultrasound helps work out what it is.

Does a scrotal ultrasound hurt?

It is generally painless. Light pressure may be uncomfortable if the area is already tender.

Should I book a scan for sudden testicular pain?

No. Sudden severe pain needs urgent assessment at an emergency department, as it can be a time-critical condition.

How do I book a scrotal ultrasound online?

Choose a clinic on Radly, select Ultrasound as your scan, add your preferred timing and attach your referral, then send your booking request. The clinic contacts you to confirm the appointment and any preparation.

How soon can I get a scrotal ultrasound?

Appointments for ultrasound are usually 1–3 days, depending on the clinic and the exam. You can send a request on Radly at any time, and the clinic replies with its next available time.
