Almost never in a way that makes sense. A few private clinics may scan you without a referral, but you usually pay the full private fee with no Medicare rebate. And many MRI sites will refuse self-referred patients.

Without a valid referral you also risk:

• Results not going back to a doctor who can act on them • Missing the clinical check that the scan is appropriate • Paying hundreds more than a rebate-eligible scan

In practice: see a GP or specialist first. A standard GP consult is often bulk billed, and the referral unlocks Medicare for eligible MRI items.
