A CBCT scan uses a cone-shaped X-ray beam that rotates around your head to build a 3D model of the teeth, jaw bone, nerves and sinuses. Your dentist or specialist can look at the area from any angle and take precise measurements.
You sit or stand at the machine with your head supported, and may bite on a small block. The scan itself takes under a minute. The area scanned can be small (a few teeth) or large (both jaws), depending on your referral.
CBCT uses more radiation than an OPG but generally less than a medical CT. It is excellent for bone and teeth but not soft tissues, so it isn't used to assess things like the gums in detail.
Why your doctor might request a CBCT dental scan
- Dental implant planning, measuring bone height and width
- Wisdom teeth close to the jaw nerve
- Root canal problems, cracks or hidden infection
- Orthodontic cases such as impacted canine teeth
- Jaw joint or sinus assessment by a specialist

Referral, Medicare & bulk billing
CBCT scans are usually requested by dentists, endodontists, orthodontists and oral surgeons. Medicare generally doesn't cover dental CBCT, so it is usually privately billed, and some health funds contribute under extras cover. Not every clinic has CBCT; Radly only shows clinics that list it. The clinic confirms billing when it confirms your request.

CBCT dental scan FAQs
What is the difference between a CBCT and an OPG?
An OPG is a single 2D overview. A CBCT is a 3D scan with much more detail, used when exact measurements or angles are needed.
Do I need a CBCT before a dental implant?
Many implant dentists request one to measure bone and locate nerves and sinuses before surgery.
Is a CBCT the same as a CT scan?
They are related, but CBCT is designed for teeth and jaws and generally uses a lower dose than a medical CT of the face.
How do I book a CBCT dental scan online?
Choose a clinic on Radly, select Dental X-Ray as your scan, add your preferred timing and attach your referral, then send your booking request. The clinic contacts you to confirm the appointment and any preparation.
How soon can I get a CBCT dental scan?
Appointments for dental X-ray are walk-in or same day at most clinics, depending on the clinic and the exam. You can send a request on Radly at any time, and the clinic replies with its next available time.
