6, 7 & 8 Week Ultrasound: Early Pregnancy Scans Explained

An early pregnancy ultrasound is a scan done at around 6, 7, or 8 weeks - earlier than many routine dating scans. Its job is to confirm the pregnancy is developing in the right place, check the heartbeat, count how many babies there are, and estimate how far along you are.

Like every pregnancy scan, it's an ultrasound: sound waves, no radiation, and safe at every stage. Whether you call it a 6 week scan, 7 week scan, 8 week scan, or viability scan, it's the same examination - the timing just changes what's visible.

Pregnancy changes fast week to week at this stage:

• 6 weeks - the pregnancy sac and often a tiny embryo a few millimetres long; the heartbeat is frequently visible but not always yet • 7 weeks - the heartbeat is usually clearly visible, and the embryo can be measured accurately for dating • 8 weeks - the embryo has roughly doubled since week 6, the heartbeat is well established, and dating is very accurate

If a scan before about 7 weeks can't show everything, you may be asked to return in a week or two. That's common and usually not a cause for alarm - a few days makes a real difference at this stage.

Reasons your GP might refer you before the routine dating scan window include:

• Bleeding or pain in early pregnancy • Uncertain dates, or irregular cycles that make dating by period unreliable • A previous ectopic pregnancy or miscarriage, for reassurance and to confirm location • IVF or fertility treatment - clinics usually scan around 6-8 weeks to confirm the pregnancy • Checking for twins after fertility treatment or a strong family history

Quite possibly, and that's normal. Before about 7-8 weeks the pregnancy is small and sits deep in the pelvis, so a transvaginal ultrasound - an internal scan using a slim probe - often gives a much clearer answer than scanning through the abdomen.

It's safe in pregnancy, done only with your consent, and frequently turns an inconclusive early scan into a definite heartbeat. The sonographer will explain everything on the day, and you can ask for a chaperone or a female sonographer when booking.

For the abdominal part of the scan you'll usually need a full bladder - most clinics ask you to drink around two glasses to a litre of water in the hour before your appointment and not empty your bladder. If a transvaginal scan is needed, you'll be asked to empty it first.
